Stock up on diapers, set up the crib, get the car seat ready... your to-do list in your second and third trimester expands quickly. One more thing to add to the list- book a newborn photographer!
Once you've found your ideal newborn photographer, you should contact them. Ideally this will happen when you are between 26-34 weeks; but the earlier the better! Why should your newborn photographer be booked in advance? Here are a few reasons:
1. Secure your photographers availability
Photographers, regardless of their specialty, get booked months in advance. Newborn photographers are no exception. By reaching out to your newborn photographer in your second trimester or early on in your third trimester, you have a better chance of guaranteeing their availability for you baby's photographs. Even if your session does not occur on your originally scheduled date (babies are rarely born on the day we want them to be!), your photographer will have your session on their calendar and be able to reschedule you within the desired time frame.
2. Personalize your session
By booking your newborn photographer early on, you have more of an opportunity to
personalize your session. Most newborn photographers will send you a questionnaire after you've completed booking a session with them. This allows you to give your preferences regarding backdrops and props. It also gives you the opportunity to make special requests, which can then be accommodated by your photographer. Such as including a loved one's photograph or a specific prop into your session.
3. Relax after your baby is born
You just had a baby... the last thing you are going to want to be stressing about is finding a newborn photographer. Instead of worrying about finding someone you like, filling out their contract, answering a questionnaire, etc. you'll be able to enjoy your newborn snuggles, and maybe even catch up on some sleep, all because you booked a photographer in advance.
Booking your newborn photographer in advance isn't just useful for the photographer, it's useful for you too. Not only does it give you time to prepare for your session and make special requests, but it also takes an important item off of your to-do list once your baby is born.
